One Month Old

One month old already.
Up a size in diapers
Starting to wear size 0-3 months instead of newborn clothes
Slept his first 5 hour stretch

Oh my goodness, I did not fully understand other moms when they said time would go by so quickly when I had him. I think I was anticipating the actual days and moments to happen very quickly, but what I am learning is that he ages and changes so quickly. Whether its a facial expression or a new sound, those little things he does, change and evolve so fast! A month ago today he was a teeny tiny baby weighing in at just under 6 lbs. Today he is my big boy well on his way to 10 lbs. He has accomplished so much in a short month and it can be so easy to forget how much this little guy has really achieved since his debut! He has mastered the art of eating! He fills his little tummy in 10 minutes flat, lucky mommy I am! He has put himself on a pretty good sleep schedule (we have our days though). He LOVES the bath. It is my favorite time with him! He is even starting to focus on mommy and daddy! We are so lucky to have a healthy little guy, and i cant wait to see what month 2 will bring (please be more sleep) haha! We are off to Banff with Grandma next week for a little getaway! We are also working on naps in our crib instead of bassinet. Mommy would really like to go back to her room with Daddy, but until we are sleeping in our crib I will stick it out in the spare bedroom with Benson. Only a few more weeks and I can get back to working out as well. All in all I think I can say the hardest and yet a very rewarding month is over. I feel recovered for the most part and ready to take on whatever the next month has in store for us!

How He Got Here

Well I figure since I think it's a pretty amazing story I should probably share! How did little Alexander come into this world? 100 miles an hour his Daddy claims! Well actually, not quite but I'll give you the rundown! On the night of July 20 I started having some light cramping, different than Braxton Hicks, but not too serious. As the days progressed so did the pains I was feeling. They went from a 1 or 2/10 to 4 or 5/10 by Friday. I had an appointment with my doctor Friday but had ZERO progress. How disappointing! Saturday they continued to get worse and by Sunday they were very painful. I had a busy day Sunday with my mom but I decided to start timing them! They were lasting 40 seconds or so and coming every 5 - 8 minutes. By midnight Sunday the pain was too much so we headed to the hospital! Only to find out I was 0 cm. No progress still! They sent me home with a shot of morphine to help me through the night. I slept all night and all day (still feeling the pains but not as intensely). Later in the day (Monday) once the morphine had worn off, the pains were back! I tried to work through them but by 7:00 pm I started timing them again. This time they were a minute long and coming every 5 minutes. I was worried this was "false" labour again so I decided to try and sleep through the night. By 11:00 my hubby had fallen asleep (probably his hand too, from all the squeezing I was doing). At this point they were every 3 minutes! I continued to deny this might be labour and paced around the house, keeling over every time a contraction hit. By 12:30 am I decided I should go back to the hospital and get another morphine shot so I could sleep through the night. I decided to call my mom to take me so Sandy could sleep. Just in case, I put the phone on his nightstand! Well by the time we got tot he hospital my contractions were 1-2 minutes apart, and excruciating. I couldn't talk or walk through them. Deep breathes!! We got up to the maternity floor and found out I was 4 cm! I could even have my epidural! Perfect!!

Now to wake Sandy up! We finally got through to him and he rushed to the hospital. Within the hour I was moved to a delivery room and given my heavenly epidural! I spent the next few hours sleeping and did not progress, until around 7:00 and within half an hour I progressed from 4 cm to 9 cm. It was almost time to start pushing. There were a few complications along the way but by 9:53 it was push time! Eight minutes later, yes eight, little Alexander was here! And that is the story of how he arrived! I will share stories of our hospital experience later but I thought this part was important to get out before mommy brain took over and I forgot anything! Not that I can imagine losing any detail from that very special day!

Neglected!

My poor poor blog! So neglected. What can I say, we have been busy, settling in and adjusting to our new life! Little Alexander is doing great! We are getting used to our new routine and schedule (or lack-there-of). Our first week home was a bit challenging especially with Sandy working long hours, but we survived and our second week together has been much better. I am dealing with the sleepless nights, my emotions have calmed down and I have ventured out of the house alot more. We have been banished to the spare bedroom, but that is ok because we know Daddy needs his sleep for work. Plus Sandy helps me out on the weekends with overnight feeds which is really helpful and I appreciate it so much.

Benson is adjusting to his new brother very well. He follows us around everywhere we go (every diaper change, feed and nap) and is very concerned when Alexander cries. Our favorite things are bath time, walks in the stroller, and of course snuggles. He is growing so much already. When we brought him home he was 5 lbs 13 oz and when I went into the health unit on his 2 week birthday, he was a whopping 7 lbs 5 oz! Good little eater. But that will have to be it for today's update, it's time for mommy to join baby for a nap!
